The way I see it, there are three ways to read a book.
1) to avoid reality
2) to grant yourself a little breather and
3) to broaden your horizons
Out of this list, you should never read for reason number one. As badly as you may wish it were, reality can never be avoided, it will always be there to slap you across the face.
What you can do is grant yourself a small reprieve from reality, recharging your batteries so you can better handle whatever’s thrown at you.
And lastly, the best thing about reading. Broadening ones horizons. Reading gives us the chance to live the lives of strangers in strange lands. We can be the widow, the scorned wife, the child, the father, anyone really. This allows us to practice empathy for other walks of life and also gives us the chance to se our own lives through the eyes of someone else.
